My Grandmother, The Chemist
Joshua Lindenbaum

They were soft dessert sponges

docked in soup

The hot broth

wouldn’t take them apart

yet a push with a spoon

would split them into phases of the moon.

After the matza balls, carrots,

and dill were consumed,

I would tip the bowl

loudly slurping away

what settled to the bottom.
