On reading Nelly Sachs

It seems we’ll always find this place

where voices drift like ashfall in the light

to build our house upon the lifted bone

that’s gently penetrated mud and stone

where the angel slips its slender song

beneath the tightly shingled dream of days

to scan the sand-strewn, patterned sky

for answers only questions can supply.

She loosens all your hands have gathered,

she teaches breath again its timorous tune,

the knowledge of these timid tongues,

the silent hands to which this earth belongs.

Walk lightly therefore on the listening ground,

breathe softly in this wounded air,

and prepare to bear the wondrous weight

of plundered tooth, the gleam of gathered hair.
